If a woman saw Śyāma holding another by the arm in a bower, friend, would she still laugh? Had she no modesty or family restraint within her heart, that Kanhaiyā could erase it upon the road? She never even beheld Gopāla, friend, yet youth arrived and began its crooked play. What use is regret now that childhood has slipped from her hands?

Show the flash and graceful fall of Your garment, the swing of fresh earrings, the dance of Your brows and the love within Your eyes. Mohana, discerning treasury of virtue and beauty, play the flute again and cool the body’s burning. O Banavārī, I offer myself to You today—come to my bower and sing one sweet melody. Young prince of Nanda, thief of hearts, peacock-plumed flute-player, dark Beloved—come this way.

They do not fill their pots at the riverbank, set foot upon the road, or do any work at home; they only sit and sigh. At a single hearing one turned back, another rolled upon the ground, and tears streamed from another’s eyes. That hunter has slain all the women of Vraja, says Rasakhān; alas, He has made their families a laughingstock. Find some remedy: have the bamboo cut down, so bamboo will not grow and the flute will never sound again.

Are these lovely vines of the wish-fulfilling tree, bearing the four fruits of life, or streams from the wish-fulfilling cow, awakening love? Is this a necklace of wish-fulfilling gems shining upon the breast, worn upon a broad throat and pouring forth light? Beyond the Lord’s own story stands the master’s sweet voice, giver of liberation’s joy and delightful to Rasakhān’s mind. It mocks the sweetness of sugar, leaves every other throat discontent, torments crystallized sugar, and makes nectar itself withdraw in shame.

Someone smears sacred ash upon the limbs and finds immense joy, yet remains dyed through with love. At the name of Nātha the heart blossoms; at Kānh’s name it fills with longing. If by taking up yoga I may meet Hari’s beloved, what pain is there if I split my ears like a yogī? If this accords with Mohana’s intention, then tell everyone: gather together and awaken Gorakha.

What a shameless land this is—the world has Holī, but Vraja is one endless uproar. I was going to fill water at Yamunā when they saw my fair face. Little boys said to me, ‘Come into the bowers,’ and red veins sprang into their eyes. Friend, even those whose sight once frightened us now stand beyond the boundary of shame and delusion. Old women and ordinary people alike—each is more insolent than the last; no one remains bound to anyone. Nanda’s son stole my mind, friend, brushing against me as He passed like a thief. Rasakhān says: instructed by His companions, they touched every limb of mine and would not heed my pleading words.
