One should insure that the beads are matching in terms of size and shape. Beads that have been eaten by insects should be rejected and they should be purified by washing them with the five products obtained from the cow. The beads should be strung as previously described, so that they are arranged in order, from the biggest to the smallest. One should use nine strands of thread that have been prepared by his pious wife, and these should also be purified with the five products obtained from the cow. If the mala is to be used for the performance of religious rituals, white string should be used. If the mala is to be used for chanting mantras for the purpose of bringing others under control, the thread should be red. If the mala is to be used for chanting mantras to subdue one's enemies, the thread should be black. In this regard, silk thread may also be used to string the mala.
