HV 7.1
य इदं शृणुयान् नित्यं पृथोश् चरितम् आदितः । पुत्रपौत्रसमायुक्तो मोदते सुचिरं भुवि ॥
ya idaṃ śṛṇuyān nityaṃ pṛthoś caritam āditaḥ | putra-pautra-samāyukto modate su-ciraṃ bhuvi
'He who hears this Pṛthu-carita continually from the beginning — joined with sons and grandsons — rejoices long on earth.'
The Living Words
*Śṛṇuyān nityam*, 'may hear continually'. *Pṛthoḥ caritam āditaḥ*, 'Pṛthu-carita from the beginning'. *Putra-pautra-samāyuktaḥ*, 'joined with sons and grandsons'. *Modate su-ciram bhuvi*, 'rejoices long on earth'.
The Heart of It
The verse gives the fruit of hearing Pṛthu's story. *Putra-pautra-samāyuktaḥ modate* — 'rejoices with sons and grandsons'. The Varkari tradition's reading: hearing the right kings' stories produces the long household-joy of generations-intact. Jñāneśvar's Haripāṭh's pre-recitation verse — often promising family-continuity, *putra-pautra-sukhīvatām* — has HV 7.1 as its Sanskrit source.
