Fresh English translation

The seventh verse finishes by saying that those who repeat the name cross over, while assemblies of the wise beat their drums in praise. The eighth declares that a lover who sings Rāma’s lovely name attains beloved Rāma. For a devoted repeater, the name reveals both the attributeless and embodied forms; worshipping it, Rasaraṅgamaṇi installs Sītā and Rāma within the heart. Thus the Eight Verses on Rāma’s Name are complete. The next praise says that Rāma’s name is even more merciful than Rāma. Rāma appeared openly in Tretā, but his beautiful name shines in all four ages. Rāma gave his own abode to the people of Ayodhyā; the name eternally ferries every being across existence. Though distinct from both Rāma’s attributeless and embodied forms, the one auspicious name reveals both, as a single sun fills the world with light. Therefore repeat it with breath, mind, and mouth. A brother without the name is no true brother; a friend is like death; a dishonoured father is like a wasting disease. Veda without the name is pain, śāstra a weapon-blow, and a compendium a harmful text. Religious refinement without the name is emptied of rasa, companionship is broken, and affection loses its limbs. Joined to the name, all are alive like a breathing body; without it they are a corpse. A day without the name is a dwelling of misery and abasement; each watch is like Yama’s torment. Each moment is a blow of the rod of Time. Without the name, knowledge becomes ignorance and yoga bad yoga; austerity becomes torment, sin awakens, and action is the ash of fire. The stanza’s final comparison—everything without the numeral of Rāma is zero—continues on the next leaf.
