Fresh English translation

The preceding stanza concludes: without Rāma’s numeral all is zero, but with the name’s digit every member becomes tenfold essence. Ayodhyā, lovely-named Sarayū, Ayodhyā’s Lord, and mothers such as Kauśalyā are auspicious. The name, form, play, and abode of Sītā-Rāma are auspicious; so are Rāma’s bow and arrows, his weapons that protect the people. Māṇḍavī and Bharata, Urmilā and Lakṣmaṇa, Śrutakīrti and Śatrughna, and famous Hanumān are auspicious. The friends, companions, servants, and devotees, and all the bonds of Mithilā and Ayodhyā, bestow auspiciousness. Rāma-bhakti, supreme love and knowledge, the lineage and relation of surrender, Rāmānanda and Tulsīdās, Rāma’s sovereign mantra and the guru who gives it, Vasiṣṭha, Viśvāmitra, Vālmīki, countless saints and devotees, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and avatāras such as the Fish—all give Rasaraṅgamaṇi an auspicious dawn. The couplets teach that one who desires happiness should do good, since wrongdoing brings sorrow; whoever seeks freedom and its method should worship Rāma. Suffering exhausts wrongdoing and enjoyment exhausts merit, so abandon both and join yourself to Rāma’s feet. Pain born of sin may destroy that sin, yet it is unbearable: ‘Raghunātha, protect me!’ Distraught, Rasaraṅgamaṇi truly takes refuge and begs Raghubīra to remove his pain and cease being displeased. He invites Raghubīra and Jānakī, Bharata, Lakṣmaṇa, Śatrughna, and Hanumān to dwell in his heart. A song then invokes merciful Rāma as the poet’s protector in all three times and all three worlds, within and without, bearing bow and arrows. The compassionate Lord destroyed demons and saved Prahlāda; he struck down mighty Bāli and made Sugrīva his beloved friend. He felled Khara and fourteen thousand demons and protected the sages of Daṇḍaka. The catalogue continues on the next page.
