Fresh English translation

‘All things are joined to a fault; it is indeed very difficult to abandon.’ The beauty of the Supreme Self's form melts even men through separation and makes them like women. The apparent ‘fault’ it produces is self-directed desire—namely, desire for divine enjoyment—and this is certainly impossible to relinquish. This is ironic praise. Once the worshipper sees the divine auspicious form, even if he wishes not to enjoy bodily contact with the Lord, he cannot hold back: that form itself has such attractive power that it draws him toward itself, as a magnet draws iron. Direct vision of the Lord is of two kinds, external and internal. The external occurs through the outward eyes; the internal through the eye of the inner faculty. The latter is called mental, and its service is known as the eight-period mental service. It is not attained by practice alone but by the grace of the Divine Couple. The Bhagavad Gītā 6.28 says that the self, touching Brahman with ease, experiences the highest happiness. Brahmasūtra 4.4.27 similarly states, ‘Because the sign indicates equality only in enjoyment.’ The matter is clarified in sūtra 293. Sūtra 263 reads: ‘How can there be conversation between the mute and the deaf, and how could one desire anything else?’ Its explanation continues on the next page.
