—attain such a state? A verse occurs in Śrī Vālmīki: ‘On seeing Rāma, the forest-dwellers assumed forms filled with wonder.’ Śrī Vedavyāsa makes the same point explicit in the Śrī Padma Purāṇa: ‘Long ago all the great sages dwelling in Daṇḍakāraṇya beheld Rāma, Hari in his beautiful embodied form, and desired to enjoy union with him.’ That is, in the Tretā age all the sages living in Daṇḍakāraṇya saw the lovely form of Śrī Rāmabhadra, remover of sorrow, and desired enjoyment with him in a feminine disposition. Scripture and tradition teach that prakṛti is the object of the puruṣa's enjoyment. Is the individual soul, then, also prakṛti—making the Supreme Self the enjoyer and itself becoming the object of enjoyment in the disposition of a wife? Yes. Prakṛti is of two kinds, inert and conscious; every soul is conscious prakṛti. The universally accepted Bhagavad Gītā gives the proof: ‘Earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, understanding, and ego—this is my prakṛti divided eightfold. This is the lower; apart from it, mighty-armed one, know my other, higher prakṛti, become the living soul, by which this world is sustained.’ (7.4-5) Thus earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, understanding, and ego are the eight divisions of the Lord's lower, inert prakṛti. His other, higher prakṛti is the conscious living soul by which the whole world is sustained. It is therefore established that the soul is prakṛti. Moreover, even in liberation the soul abides in a feminine disposition. The Pātañjala Yoga-sūtra supplies evidence: ‘Or the power of consciousness is established in its own form.’
