Fresh English translation
The preceding verse is explained as follows. The elided dative ending after ra teaches the relation of dependent remainder to its possessor, while the medial a, described as indicating exclusivity, teaches the wife-husband relationship. The author stresses that the great teacher uses the word vijñeya—this relation is especially and decisively to be understood. The letter ma, derived here from the verbal root man in the sense of knowing, teaches the relation of property and owner: the individual soul is what belongs, and God is its master. The word Rāma teaches the relation of support and supported. The cited śruti-smṛti fragments speak of beings entering into That and again passing into dissolution in That at the end of an age. On this basis one should understand God as the support and the soul as supported. The dative ending āya after Rāma teaches the relationship of one who is served and one who serves.
