Mantra 20 declares: ‘He is our kinsman, progenitor, and ordainer; he knows all abodes and worlds. There the gods, attaining immortality, dwell in the third abode.’ The commentary identifies that figure with Śrī Rāma, the kinsman of all souls, and reads the mantra as teaching relationships of name and devotion: parent and child, husband and wife, servant and served, friend and friend, parental tenderness, and others. These bonds therefore rest on revelation, so teachers commit no impropriety by asking a disciple to adopt a particular relationship. Janitā means that he is father to all; vidhātā means that he arranges every happiness. The latter word is also taken to establish the husband-wife relationship, since no one other than a husband is the bestower of every marital joy. A statement of Jānakī to Anasūyā in the Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa is cited: what woman would not honour the husband who gives immeasurable happiness? The author accordingly says that bridal devotion and erotic devotional rasa possess surpassing joy and are cultivated by the highest teachers. The words ‘he knows all abodes and worlds’ are read of Rāma, crest-jewel of connoisseurs, as knower of Mithilā, Ayodhyā, and the other sacred realms. They suggest the terrain of bridal rasa and the companions who serve as its stimulants. The final mantra phrase concerning the gods in the third abode begins to be explained and continues on the next page.
