The Skanda-purāṇa citation resumes: the tulasī necklace is to be worn always. It removes fault, purifies the three worlds through its wearer, and even gods such as Indra and Yama bow their heads to that person. The author calls this a direct divine command and therefore the highest kind of authority. The inner formations now follow. Faith is defined as holding fast to what is real. After faith come trust, steadfastness, relish, and related dispositions—love, devotion, the mystery of surrender, and so forth—all arising through the teacher. Once both external and internal formations have been received, the teacher instructs the disciple in contemplative relationship; this is the doctrine of the lineage. The topic is then presented as questions and answers. Contemplation is performed by the individual soul beyond the lowly material body, and the relation of that soul to the Supreme Self is called contemplative relationship. The meaning of self-relationship was explained at the beginning. Question: Is the relationship between individual self and Supreme Self beginningless or does it begin in time? State the authorities. Answer: It is beginningless. Its authorities are revelation, remembered scripture, the words of great souls, and the Lord's own speech. A Vedic proof is introduced and continues on the next page.
