The placement instruction resumes: two arrow-marks are to be given on the other arm. The teacher then makes the upright mark on the disciple's forehead with earth from Rāma's sacred field and places within it the turmeric-coloured sign of Śrī, understood as Janaka's daughter. The disciple receives a name ending in śaraṇa or dāsa and joined to the name Sītā-Rāma, and a double tulasī necklace fitted to the throat, which must not be abandoned even for a moment. The teacher whispers the six-syllable mantra of the Divine Couple into the right ear. After receiving the five formations, the disciple duly worships the teacher to the extent possible. This, the text says, is Vyāsa's teaching to Yudhiṣṭhira. The next section gives the method of wearing the upright forehead mark. A passage attributed to the Mādhyaṃdina recension of the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa commands that the upright mark be drawn; the knower thereby becomes stainless, escapes return to birth, and attains communion and the world of Brahman. The commentary stresses that ālikhet is an injunction and says that wearing the two-lined mark leads beyond rebirth to the Divine Couple. The tulasī necklace likewise must never be abandoned, for this is God's own command. A Skanda-purāṇa verse says that one who wears a necklace made of tulasī wood belongs to the Lord without doubt, even when ritually impure or irregular in conduct. The citation continues by comparing it to the sacred thread on the next page.
