The preceding sentence resumes: the Sanatkumāra-saṃhitā, in its sixth chapter, has Vyāsa explain to Yudhiṣṭhira the five-formation rite for an exclusive Vaiṣṇava devoted to Sītā-Rāma. The cited verses prescribe offerings into fire with Rāma's mantra, followed by pure metal emblems of bow and arrows heated in the fire and applied by the teacher to the disciple's arms. They further prescribe the upright forehead mark, the figure of Śrī or Jānakī within it, a relationship-name connecting the disciple to Rāma, the Rāma liberating mantra heard from the teacher, and a tulasī necklace that the disciple must never abandon. Having received these formations, the disciple should worship, circumambulate, and bow to the guru. The Hindi explanation says that a qualified Vaiṣṇava with purified inner faculties should approach the teacher, prostrate, and pray. The teacher duly establishes the sacred fire and offers oblations with Rāma's mantras. The pure-metal emblems—bow, arrows, and the rest—are heated in that fire and applied to the disciple's two arms.
