Answer: First, the upright mark made with earth from Śrī Rāma's sacred field, bearing the crescent and Śrī at its centre; a pair of tulasī necklaces resting at the throat; the heated emblems of bow and arrow, the bow at the root of the left arm and the pair of arrows at the right; the signet and crescent upon the right forearm; the name-mark borne upon the forehead; the six-syllable mantra of the Divine Couple; and one's own name expressing that relationship—these constitute the five sacred formations. The inner formations are faith, trust, steadfastness, relish, and the like. After these two kinds of formation the teacher should impart instruction in the relationship cultivated through sacred contemplation: such is the tradition.
