The supreme guru, an ocean of joy-giving rasa, brings the disciple there without the labour of other practices. Serving the lotus feet of the revered teacher produces supreme delight; the happiness of the Lord of rasa grows in the heart together with the eternal play of his retinue. The five means overcome danger and bring one to the purifying Lord’s feet. Yugalānanya Śaraṇa composed this so that hearing and reflecting upon it makes worldly becoming fruitless. Among all five means he gives supreme rank to service of the guru, the beautiful and stainless ornament of Yugalānanya’s refuge. Friend, the five fruits subdue other deceptive objects. Be attentive and hold the fifth as sacred. Although distinctions spread through them, the fruit of human striving is ultimately one; without knowing it, those who lack discernment obtain only sorrow in the heart. Wealth, dharma, desire, and liberation are the four well-known human aims, beautiful and apparently joy-giving. The fifth is the lovely meeting with Sītā’s Lord, sung as the highest human aim. Now hear the pleasing forms of the four, and then the virtues of the highest and most purifying. Dharma takes the vow of protecting helpless souls and helps body, mind, and speech in every way. Entirely abandoning threefold violence, it assumes the incomparable radiance of compassion. Its constant authority is the Vedic ordinance, not imagination fashioned in one’s own head. Compassion is queen among all dharmas; the wise hold it and meet Hari. Consider dharma’s four feet—truth, purity, austerity, and compassion. With compassion they all give happiness; without it none bears fruit or offers the least help.
