Having properly received that treasury of happiness, one next beholds the teacher through grace. In the teacher’s company one learns the colour and rasa of one’s own true nature and the Supreme’s pre-eminent nature. Day after day one reflects upon the charming, heart-delighting form of Sītā’s Lord. Gazing with the eyes, the understanding goes mad and the mind leaps and falls into the steps of love. Even a moment’s separation from the Beloved becomes unbearably heavy; every worldly interruption therefore becomes welcome. A continual cry of grief remains in the heart and streams of tears flow from the eyes. Food, drink, honour, and the rest are abandoned; night and day one longs to meet the Lord. Body, house, and relationships create countless obstacles. ‘When shall I abandon them?’ the heart continually groans. ‘When shall I remain uninterruptedly in the single rasa of holy company, the root of beautiful joy, and act without the multitude of obstacles in a way pleasing to Sītā’s Lord?’ Knowing the body and all its associates to be supreme adversaries, one continually begs Sītā’s Beloved for the means to relinquish it. How far can I describe this wondrous anguished form? By becoming Yugalānanya’s surrendered one, the soul meets its own Beloved. Now consider the marks of the contented refugee and hold them properly within the heart. It abandons childish thought, ignorance, and bad company, and continually delights in the Lord’s fellowship. It roasts the seeds of sensory desire and, whenever it acts wrongly, shakes its head in remorse. Having received a dull body through many arrangements and wandered wearily through heaven and hell, it carries profound disillusionment without dejection and longs to meet the Player of Ayodhyā. Then it finds the beautiful, supremely purifying lotus feet of the true guru. Learning from him the means of attainment, it becomes fearless and its heavy toil ends.
