Fresh English translation

There one meditates upon the heart-stealing image of Sītā’s Lord, naturally filled with joy. From nail to crown his ever-new limbs are an ocean of rasa and make the understanding a storehouse of consciousness. Gazing again and again at the lovely ornament upon every limb, the mind is captivated. Sītā’s Lord’s radiant form is supremely divine and a mine of auspicious virtues. One fixes the mind upon him continually, and at times love compels the form to appear. With devotional yoga as its companion, knowledge becomes pure and beholds the supreme station. It gains liberation chiefly as isolation and the appearance of threefold desire falls away. Although knowledge is a fine and proper means, it is difficult for the individual soul to grasp. Without mastery of the senses, knowledge is rare; and life is short even for that labour, so worship is the sure authority. Through worship one attains the Supreme Person, who is subject to love. Yugalānanya says: never forget the revered guru’s incomparable mantra. Without direct experience of form, pure awakening does not manifest; that supreme state is difficult in every way, as saints and true scripture establish. People chatter about knowledge to entertain the world, yet do not reach the bridge across the painful ocean of becoming. Now listen wisely as I describe devotion, the principal means. Having found a suitable teacher, joy-giving devotion increases. It remains one-flavoured like a stream of oil; its rasa-filled thread never breaks. Remembrance, attention, and love arise naturally and remain as long as the body lasts. At life’s end that same current increases, with no division when the appointed moment comes. A good soul with such steadfastness obtains Devotion, the dark Lord’s chief queen. Although this is supremely sound doctrine, devotion remains difficult for seekers of liberation; it is always easy for the liberated, but never naturally joined to mere liberation-seekers.
