Fresh English translation

These five are the principal treasuries of happiness, sung by the rasa-filled voice of the Veda. After careful reflection, I state the beautiful marks of all of them, which destroy the threefold darkness. Understand the many forms of action: daily and occasional rites and rites performed for desired results; sacrifice, charity, austerity, fire-offering, restraint, and scriptural study; twilight worship, recitation, ritual bathing, travel through holy lands, and acts that delight people; dwelling at pilgrimage places, fasting, vows such as the four-month observance, lovingly eating fruits and roots, and offering water for welcome, washing, and libation. One who sets the mind upon such works shines together with bodily discipline. For one who performs them continually without desire, all sin is destroyed. When the inner faculty becomes pure, detachment from sense-objects enters; then one undertakes, in order, the practice of the eight limbs beginning with restraint. One’s pure nature is revealed and diverse impure desires perish. Although action is described as a means, many defects are lodged within it. First one must renounce its fruits, which is difficult, and then possess detachment. A lost accent or syllable destroys the result; an auspicious act performed at the wrong time does not shine. A mantra may depend upon the sun’s northern course, and failing to obtain the proper condition brings endless sorrow. Countless other obstacles exist, so accomplishment by action is exceedingly difficult. Now give attention and hear of knowledge, chiefly directed toward isolated liberation. Knowledge dawns from auspicious deeds and brings gladness within one’s own heart. Once knowledge arises, one practises it with joyous detachment. In the bower of the mind one meditates upon the supreme Abode within the sun and fire; within it one prepares a splendid throne and spreads a divine jeweled cloth.
