The self-manifest images, such as holy Raṅganātha, possess eternal, immaterial, unconditioned bodies. Appearing auspiciously by their own will, they give devotees’ minds gladness and blessing. An image consecrated by a god is ‘divine’; one worshipped by perfected beings is ‘perfected’ and splendid. Humanly established images are of two kinds, distinguished by the wise as those in sacred abodes and those in villages. Among all worshipful forms, the self-manifest sacred stone is supremely joy-giving. None equals the Śālagrāma: its worship is exceedingly accessible, while the other four image forms beginning with the Supreme are extraordinarily rare though they remove sorrow. The sacred worshipful descent is accessible in every way, a compassionate body and essence of worshipful virtues. Yugalānanya says that worship of Śālagrāma bestows a fruit otherwise exceedingly difficult to obtain and removes faults born of limiting identity and delusion. Receive the Supreme Lord’s form through the three revered teachers; adorned with exclusive love, worship the incomparable One who is worthy of worship. Through the true guru’s compassionate gaze one receives the light of grace, and the Lord’s five forms unfold clearly. Meditate again and again within the heart upon the form of Sītā’s Lord; understanding all his portions, empowerments, and powers gives incomparable joy. Now I describe the luminous and stainless means, a treasury of happiness whose very knowledge destroys the appearance of many desires. Action, knowledge, devotion, surrender, and steadfastness in the teacher are radiant. Sacred revelation and the saints’ mouths sing these and many related means.
