English Translation
When valor departs, even a woman can beat you. Once gone, that former strength cannot be recovered. A chitta once shattered cannot be mended by any means. Says Tuka, once fortitude breaks, ruin follows close behind. In this age of Kali, one should practice kirtan; through it Narayana will grant his presence. There is no need to abandon worldly duties, retire to the forest, or take up ash and staff. Says Tuka, all other remedies are hollow beside the Name.

In Plain Words
When valor leaves a man, even a woman can beat him; and once that strength is gone, it cannot be brought back. A heart once shattered cannot be pieced together again by any means. Tuka says: once fortitude breaks, ruin follows close behind. In this age of Kali, the practice to keep is kirtan, the singing of God's name, and through it Narayana will grant his presence. There is no need to give up your worldly duties, or flee to the forest, or take up ashes and a staff. Tuka says: beside the Name, every other remedy I can see is hollow.
What it means
Two short teachings stand together here. The first is sober: some things, once broken, do not return, lost courage, a shattered heart, so guard your fortitude, because its loss opens the door to ruin. The second is Tukaram's great good news for ordinary people, and one of his best-known teachings: in this fallen age, the whole of religion can be carried by kirtan, the communal singing of God's name. You do not have to renounce your work, abandon your family for the forest, or take up the ascetic's ash and staff. Stay where you are and sing. Beside the living Name, he says, every other elaborate method is empty.
Worldly Life
The perplexities of action, karma, and navigating life in the world.
