Fresh English translation

Overcome by the secret rasa, one companion remained apart. Her awareness fixed on the Lord's beauty, she surrendered her life and yet remained dear beside him. Those such as the oilman, the husband, and the Yavana reached him by helplessly uttering his Name; servants repeat the Name with the ache of separation, and even ten servants cannot make Rāma move from them. The servant-form does not dissolve but remains nearby without desire. The three fruits of liberation each grasp one thing, while servanthood contains all four; yet the servant's station is never perfected until the three qualities are relinquished. How can a woman who has found her husband continue to belong to her father's clan? When the young women of Vraja became maidservants, all formal duties fell away; recitation, austerity, vows and observances ceased, and only then did this servanthood arise. Without awakening there is no servant—what could servanthood perceive otherwise? Without seeing there is no affection, and without affection love cannot be tasted. Devotion without love is as foolish as churning water for ghee; without holy company a rustic cannot become truly wise. Awake, the soul sees the Lord's form, and the dream-world's pleasure and pain pass. Affection grows, then love destroys formal rule, and one becomes a true servant. Countless beings live in the world under desire's rule in intellect, mind and consciousness; for the servant, desire and every illusion vanish like the snake imagined in a rope. As ash returns to space, fire, and water, and the reflected image leaves the jewel or mirror, so the servant's heart becomes pure when desire is gone. Where there is expectation there is no servant, and where there is a servant there is no expectation: Rāmacaraṇa asks how sun and night could arise in one place.
