Hearing the dialogue of consciousness, intellect, and mind, the soul starts awake and says, 'Who is instructing me? I have seen my own form; there is no other.' As thieves flee and hide when the master of the house awakens, the night of ignorance is destroyed by the light of millions of suns. Desire, anger, pride, self-importance and greed—the prowlers of darkness—withdraw, while the cakravāka birds, lotuses and the Lord's dharma blossom in the lake of joy. The soul asks for a distinct account of the station reached after abandoning the three states and entering the fourth. Seventeen principles appear in dream and twenty-four in waking; all are absorbed in deep sleep, while in the fourth all three states vanish. The reply explains: the dream-state extends through the serpent-world up to Brahmā's realm, but its end is recognized on waking. When one becomes fully alert and happy, desire has disappeared into deep sleep; then one's own form is recognized as delight in the fourth state. Dream occupies the sixteen-petalled lotus, waking the eight-petalled, deep sleep the two-petalled, and the fourth the thousand-petalled lotus. There Self-Brahman awakens and recognizes itself: it may remain a servant, or remain within Brahman. The Lord tells Śruti that Self-Brahman is wondrous; she does not know the one whose qualities she ceaselessly recites. He is forever awake above the fourth state. Śruti and Śeṣa say, 'I have spent eighty-four nights asleep—how can I tell his glory?'
