In his longing for exclusive devotion to Rāma, the poet prays: ‘O Destiny, if you make me a bird, tree, deer, or other creature, place me in the forests of Ayodhyā. If a water-creature, let me live and drink happily in Sarayū’s current. If a dog, make me the hunting mount of the royal prince. If a human being, how could I become the loving friend of Raghunandana?’ ‘If born outside caste, let me specially sweep the courtyard of Ayodhyā’s Lord. If a servant, let me serve Sītā’s feet; if a merchant, let me dwell in Ayodhyā’s marketplace. If a brahmin, let me belong to the solar dynasty’s priestly line and recite the auspicious wedding of Rāma. If a warrior, let me be born in Raghubīra’s lineage and become Rāghava’s friend.’ The next stanza imagines other intimate roles in the divine household: as Rāma’s companion, Rasaraṅgamaṇi would be a bee in love with Sītā’s lotus feet, receive affection from dear Lakṣmaṇa, share kinship with Śatrughna and Bharata, and be the very youngest child playing in the lap of Ayodhyā’s Lord. Turning to Hanumān, the poet says that even one so sinful becomes meritorious at his sight; the proud become humble on beholding him; the unfortunate gain fortune by singing his virtues; and the ignorant become wise by calling his name. The cruel and lustful become serene and free of desire; even those opposed become no longer contrary when turned toward him. Bowing his head, this servant of Sītā’s Lord asks Hanumān’s blessing and begs the lord of monkeys never to depart from his side. The page begins another plea to the gracious, smiling Hanumān to look upon the poet’s hardened mind; it continues onto the next leaf.
