The unfinished garland of comparisons continues: Rāma’s fame is fragrant and radiant like camphor, like a white lotus-bud; lotus-like, Lakṣmī-like, and like moonlight from the moon. So sings Rasaraṅgamaṇi, lord among poet-cuckoos. It is like gold and the Kaustubha gem, and like millions of wish-fulfilling cows: the spotless fame of the lord of Kosala grants every desire. For Śuka, Sanaka, and the other sages it is nectar to the ears, beautiful and succulent like an autumn moon. It is purer than the milk-ocean and holier than the celestial Gaṅgā; hearing it, Hanumān receives it reverently upon his head. It is Sarasvatī’s good fortune and fair face, a wish-fulfilling tree for saints, and Śiva’s entire treasure. Sītā-Rāma’s renown is the cause of the highest destiny, the abode of every joy, and the crest-jewel of Vedic song. The truth of Sītā-Rāma—their transcendence, distinction of form, and non-difference—is so inaccessible that even the Vedas cannot fully know it. Singing pure songs about the rasa and discipline of their love removes fear of worldly existence, confusion, and desire. Vāmadeva repeats their name through all eight watches; by it he carries every soul dwelling in Kāśī across. Sītā-Rāma are the Master and the rain-cloud under Svātī, while Rasaraṅgamaṇi is the thirsty cātaka bird holding to the one firm refuge of Sītā-Rāma. Bharata may be the lovely cātaka of dark-cloud Rāma, or the bee drunk on love for his lotus feet; he may be embodied servitude itself, adorned with loving righteousness and knowledge; a hero whose body bears every pure saintly virtue, unstained by austerity, renunciation, and yoga; the manifest mass of Rāma-love—the immensely fortunate brother and devotee of Rāma. Lakṣmaṇa may be Raghunandana’s servant and devotee, his chief minister and treasury of wisdom, his heroic commander and warrior, an embodied arrow that destroys the enemy host. His lotus hand performs auspicious deeds. He is Rasaraṅgamaṇi’s beloved friend and life, an ocean containing the nectarous essence of all these virtues, and the wise brother of Rāma. The stanza concludes on the next page.
