—and became dear to him. The excellent devotee, servant born of the Wind, was like the moon to the night-blooming lily. On the ocean shore Rasarangamaṇi’s Rāma heard the report amid his army, and the fearless Rāvaṇa fell into great apprehension. The lord of Laṅkā sat in council and asked his ministers for counsel; they gave him evil counsel, fastening their belts for death. Vibhīṣaṇa said, ‘Dear brother, hear what is good for you: return Sītā and fall at the Lord’s feet.’ The villain grew angry on hearing this and insulted his brother. Knowing the ten-headed king to be under death’s sway, the devotee of Śrī Rāma came, covered in love, to take refuge with King Rāma, the Rasa-Rāma dearer than his life. From far away he saw the two brothers, givers of bliss to the eyes. He looked again upon that dwelling of magnificent beauty and stood still for a moment, absorbed in Rāma. Tender arms, lovely limbs, eyes that release fear, a beautifully dark body, lion-like shoulders, broad chest, and radiant face: Śrī Rasa-Rāma was the very source of delight. Turning toward the devotee Vibhīṣaṇa, he let all the monkeys hear; strengthening trust in their hearts, the Lord spoke a gladdening word. ‘He slew Bāli and befriended Sugrīva; the fame of his gracious power is awake in the world. Hearing that such a gracious and well-disposed master exists, says Rasarangamaṇi, my mind runs to him. O Mahāprabhu Rāghava, refuge of every world, grant the boon of fearlessness. Make my petition quickly: Vibhīṣaṇa stands nearby as one who has sought refuge.’ ‘I was born in the night-roamer’s lineage; my name is Vibhīṣaṇa, the younger brother of ten-headed Rāvaṇa. I bear a body of darkness, devoted to sin, like an owl enamoured of night. Yet my ears heard your fame: O Lord of rasa, you are the saviour who destroys the fear of becoming. Protect me, all-pervading Śrī Raghubīra, eternal giver of joy to those who seek refuge.’
