[Root — Chaupai and Doha] Śaśśā: Take up sixfold surrender. Keep the mind aligned with the Lord. Abandon every action opposed to him, and ask the Lord, ‘Protect me.’ Śaśśā: Make the mind guileless and forsake cruel conduct. Then you will be dear to the Lord—the saints’ word is certain. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Through the consonant śa, Śrī Rasik Alī commands: Embrace the six forms of surrender. Without embracing them the work will not be complete, and you will not attain genuine bliss. First, keep the mind favourable to the Lord: resolve that from this day whatever you do and however you proceed will accord with Śrī Prabhu. This is the resolve to do what is favourable. Next comes the abandonment of what is unfavourable: give up at once every action opposed to Śrī Prabhu. Trust in the heart that Śrī Prabhu will certainly protect you: ‘O Lord, I am yours. Please protect me. Leaving you, to whom could I go for protection? Who else is truly seated for me in this world?’ This is confidence that he will protect. The root has expressed three aspects of the sixfold surrender; the other three must be supplied and remembered, for by stating three it intends all six. Speak plainly to Bhagavān of your own lowliness and helplessness, and describe Bhagavān’s loftiness, supreme power, immense compassion, fulfilment, and gratitude. This choosing of him as protector is called surrender through divine guardianship. Tell Śrī Prabhu your most private concerns plainly, and humbly speak to him of his guarded principles concerning the fulfilment of life. Fifth is humility: remain continually absorbed in awareness of your lowliness. Regard yourself as smaller than every living being, and display pride in no respect. Sixth is self-offering: make the self depend wholly upon Bhagavān. Keep understanding it as his possession and Śrī Prabhu as its enjoyer. This is the sixth form, surrender through self-offering. Thus: self-deposit and humility complete the sixfold surrender. Having attained the six forms of surrender in this way, make the mind utterly guileless, upright, and pure, and continually abandon crooked and cruel dealings. Do not act otherwise. When all the foregoing qualities are dear to Śrī Prabhu, only then will you become dear to him. The saints have decided and affirmed this: Straight is the mind, straight the speech, and straight every deed; Tulasī says that one straightforward in every way is born of love for Raghubara. (Gosvāmī Tulasīdāsa) Brother, keep a truly straightforward nature; do not fashion speech filled with deceit. The Lord’s servant is dearer than life; the Lord guards the unwavering servant.
