[Root — Chaupai and Doha] Lallā: Make that your heart’s aim which the Purāṇas and the Vedas affirm. Without holy company this aim cannot be known; true holy company is where all its limbs are present. Lallā: Abandon a hundred thousand concerns and hold one truth in the heart: worship Rāma and keep holy company, and cross the ocean of becoming. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Through the consonant la, Śrī Rasik Alī indicates: First establish a single aim—an abiding place—for the heart. Direct the fourfold inner instrument toward it, or understand inwardly the object that is the aim: the teaching hidden in the Purāṇas and affirmed by the Vedas as their essence. Yet this aim cannot be understood merely from a self-directed, mind-led condition. Even if it is glimpsed, beginningless doubt remains. Therefore the aim, the true abiding place, is not understood without holy company; and such company itself is not quickly obtained. Holy company is that in which all the limbs of holy fellowship are available, with no missing limb for which one must wander elsewhere. Name, form, divine play, and abode: when one receives complete understanding of the aim—the full glory of this fourfold form of Bhagavān—that is called holy company. If all its limbs cannot be obtained in their fullness, the author gives the one essential teaching among a hundred thousand concerns: abandon those countless matters and hold one truth in the heart. Worship, serve, and remember Śrī Rāma while keeping the company of holy persons. By this alone every purpose will be accomplished, and you will cross the ocean of worldly becoming—that is, you will become free. Discernment is the first limb; then comes dispassion, then worship, then steadfastness in the divine Name, and then the longing of separation. As these five limbs arise in due order within the heart, the individual soul attains Bhagavān. The true guru and the disciple absorbed in devotion form the supreme abiding place; without this, nothing comes into one’s hands.
