[Root — Chaupai and Doha] Rarrā: Renounce the five pleasures of the senses and become enamoured of the nectar of Rāma’s worship. Those sensory tastes cause every disease to grow; the nectar of Rāma’s worship unites one with true happiness. Rarrā: Ignorance is night, which destroys the vision of discernment. The true guru’s knowledge is dawn; behold your one essential nature. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Through the consonant ra, the revered author indicates: Renounce the five natural sensory pleasures—sound, touch, form, taste, and smell. Do not become attached to them. Nothing can be accomplished without relinquishing the enjoyment that arises from craving all these pleasures, so abandon it without fail. Otherwise the remaining tastes cannot quickly be cast off. Even partial indulgence of the senses will immediately destroy spiritual effort and corrupt one’s worldly life. If you wish to be absorbed in the experience of bliss, devote yourself instead to the nectar contained in the worship of Śrī Rāma; become attached to it through loving delight. Attachment to sensory pleasures increases many kinds of illness in the body, while attachment to the blissful nectar of Rāma’s worship brings union with genuine happiness—that is, attainment of Bhagavān, who is the very nature of true bliss. Therefore make all five sensory experiences God-centred. Hear the sound formed by the hosts of Bhagavān’s qualities. Long for the rasa of touch—the loving union of meeting Bhagavān. Direct attachment toward Bhagavān’s form alone. Taste the nectar-filled prasāda offered for Bhagavān’s enjoyment. Receive the fragrance of Bhagavān’s lotus feet and of garlands offered to him. In all these ways embrace the blissful communion of the nectar of Śrī Rāma’s worship. Through it comes union with Bhagavān, the true happiness of the soul. Ignorance is night: it destroys the eye of discernment and does not allow discerning vision to remain. The knowledge embodied in the true guru’s instruction—the teaching about Bhagavān and the devotional attachment taught by the revered true guru—is dawn. It directly bestows the joy of realizing one’s own nature. When dawn comes, vision begins. ‘Without the relationship of servant and served, one cannot cross the ocean of becoming.’ (Śrī Gosvāmī Tulasīdāsa) See your own identity as a servant and see the entire cosmos as Bhagavān’s all-inclusive form; everything will then be accomplished. ‘I am the servant, and the whole moving and unmoving creation is Lord Rāma’s form.’ In accordance with this principle, the teaching is complete. This is the intended meaning. That bliss is your own true nature, adorned with its own happiness; contemplation of the Lord within the world is supremely incomparable.
