[Root — Chaupai and Doha] Bhambhā: You carry a heavy burden upon your head— how will you cross to the far shore of the ocean of becoming? The burden falls away when self-importance is abandoned; renounce ego and reflect with spiritual discernment. Bhambhā: Keep the good company of saints, through which Rāma’s form is revealed. Remember his abode, name, and līlā, and let the mind be steeped in all four. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Through the consonant bha, the revered Śrī Rasik Alī instructs us: A very heavy burden rests upon your head—many karmic experiences still remain to be undergone. The weight of deeds already performed lies heavily upon you. How, then, will you cross the ocean of worldly existence? There is indeed a remedy: abandon ego completely and regard yourself as the smallest of all. Consider yourself lower even than the greatly fallen, the chief among sinners, and more crooked than the most crooked. When you preserve no feeling of self-importance whatsoever, your karmas will certainly fall away and the load upon your head will become exceedingly light. If you ask how ego may be removed, it must be driven out, as stated earlier, through reflection born of knowledge. Cultivate profound humility within yourself and accord greatness even to one whom others consider very small. In this way you will become free of ego. Then you must associate with good and virtuous people. Only through such holy company will the form of Śrī Rāma be disclosed—that is, Śrī Rāma’s form will come into view. Thereafter remember Śrī Rāma’s form, name, līlā, and abode as divine embodiments of being, consciousness, and bliss. In service and worship, apply yourself to all four. Their fourfold joy will then saturate the mind: contemplation of the sacred form bestows the joy of the form; repetition and contemplation of the sacred name, the joy of the name; hearing, beholding, and contemplating the līlā, the joy of the līlā; and dwelling in and contemplating the sacred abode, the joy of the abode. Thus the mind becomes filled and steeped in the nectar of all four. And so forth: ‘Rāma’s name and form, together with līlā and abode, are supreme; this eternal fourfold reality is the embodiment of being, consciousness, and bliss.’ Hold name, form, and līlā within the mind; dwell in the sacred abode, wholly devoted to the Lord of all.
