[Root — Chaupai and Doha] Phaphphā: Brother, the mind keeps spreading outward, absorbed in desires of every kind. Regard knowledge and dispassion as its two hands; gather it in with them, and then behold something real. Phaphphā: This is the fruit of knowledge: bring the mind into your own hand. Then surrender it to your own Guru and bring Raghunātha under love’s sway. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Through the consonant pha, the revered author says: Brothers, the mind is the chief of this body. It remains absorbed in many kinds of desire; subject to those desires, it spreads and scatters. The task is accomplished only when it gathers into one place. When the living self’s two hands—knowledge and dispassion—have become strong, use those two to gather in the mind and make it steady. Only then will anything come into view. Without a steady mind, how could anything be seen? This is the purport. If one asks, the true fruit of knowledge is this: make your mind your own—bring it under your command—and steady it. Then surrender that mind into the hands of your own true Guru, the one who shows you and establishes you upon the path toward Śrī Prabhu. Do nothing contrary to the Guru’s command. What more then remains to be said? Abiding in this disposition, without doubt bring Śrī Raghunātha under the sway of your love and obtain from him whatever you desire. This is the purport. Whoever steadied the mind and placed it in the Guru’s hand thereby brought every treasure under control.
