[Root — Chaupai and Doha] Pappā: Understand the body as fashioned from the five elements; look to the Sāṃkhya scripture for their account. The mind remains enticed by the five sense objects and has entangled the self among them. Pappā: Bring all five under control and steady the mind in samādhi. By the lamp of knowledge, discern the knot and release it through a devotional disposition. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Through the consonant pa, Śrī Rasika Alī Jī Mahārāja indicates that this body is fashioned from five elements and consists of the fivefold material nature. If you wish to see its explanation, its complete form is described in the Sāṃkhya scripture—that is, it has been explained thoroughly there. ‘Earth, water, fire, ether, and air: of these five is this most lowly body composed.’ (Śrī Gosvāmī) The mind remains enticed by the five sense objects associated with them—sound, touch, form, taste, and smell—and has ensnared the self among these as well. The living self has become absorbed in the five pleasures. Therefore, bring these five sense objects under control: keep them under your command and do not come under theirs. The mind, freed from the five sense objects, will then attain stability in meditation; let it become still. Once the mind has become still, the true lamp of knowledge will reveal the knot that has formed between the inert and the conscious. Absorbed in the nectar of devotion, you will loosen that knot, separate your conscious nature, and break its connection with the inert. You will then attain your pure nature, and so forth. With regard to the five sense objects, make reverence for Hari firm; fill them all with the bliss of your own Beloved.
