[Root — Chaupai and Doha] Tattā: Abandon the three desires; do not attach the heart to offspring, wealth, or worldly standing. Pass your time in worship of Rāma, so that you do not return to a mother’s womb. Tattā: You have three true benefactors—Hari, the guru, and the saints. Take refuge in these three; do not wander until you die. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Through the consonant ta, Śrī Rasik Alī Jī Mahārāja says: Do not set the heart upon children, wealth, worldly standing, or the things of the world. Seeing the three just named, do not give them the heart and become attached. They are merely a spectacle visible here; in truth, none is your benefactor. Spend your time in worshipful devotion and loving contemplation of Śrī Raghunātha so that you need not enter a mother’s womb again. Remember Bhagavān and attain his abode. Śrī Gosvāmī Jī says: ‘The three desires are for offspring, wealth, and spouse; whose understanding has not been stained by them? All this is the retinue of Māyā—who can describe its immense power?’ He then says that amid the world you have three true well-wishers. The first is Śrī Hari, Bhagavān, who removes every sorrow and grants lasting happiness. The second is the revered guru, who frees you from the world, bestows the royal great mantra of the Divine Couple, engages you in every form of the Lord’s service, and brings you to the Lord. The third is the saint: ‘Benevolence in speech, mind, and body is the saint’s natural disposition, O King of Birds.’ Saints turn one toward Bhagavān and free one from the world’s entanglement. Thus these three alone are your supreme benefactors and well-wishers. Conscious being, take refuge in these three and become joyful. Do not become absorbed in other notions, wander within them, and die astray. Do not follow self-will, your own stubborn fixation, or a crooked course; only then will you attain happiness. Otherwise, after great suffering, only wandering through births will come into your hands. Many paths display worldly pleasure, ensnare the being, and lead it astray upon delusive roads, by which it finally reaches degradation. This is the purport. Hari, guru, and saints are true helpers; blessed and greatly fortunate are those absorbed in them. Without the company of Hari, guru, and saints, worldly sorrow and affliction can never be destroyed.
