[Root — Chaupai and Doha] Ṇaṇṇā: Bow to the feet of the saintly guru if you wish to cross the ocean of becoming. Brother, serve the feet of Sītā’s Lord; set the mind upon the path of the highest good. Ṇaṇṇā: Like an actor you have danced through many births. Nothing has come into your hands; now hold discernment in the heart. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Through the consonant ṇa, the author instructs: If you wish to cross the ocean of worldly existence—that is, to become free from the world and attain the Lord—then bow at the feet of the saintly guru. Bow your head before saintly teachers and hold them in the highest regard. Then the worthy work you wish to undertake will succeed, and you will cross the ocean of becoming with ease. After bowing to the saintly gurus, become intent upon the lotus feet of Śrī Sītā-Rāma. Direct the mind toward the highest good and benevolence—that is, toward another’s welfare. ‘Concerning the eighteen Purāṇas, Vyāsa’s teaching is twofold: merit lies in helping others, and sin in harming them.’ This is the highest good. And further: ‘Friend, this is the supreme highest good: to love Rāma’s feet in mind, deed, and speech.’ Set the mind upon the road that leads to the supreme goal. Self-interest seeks one’s own happiness; the highest good seeks another’s happiness. Dancing like an actor, you have passed through many births, and this birth too is passing away. Until now, nothing has come into your hands. Become alert and awaken now; compose yourself. Hold discernment in the heart and consider: What ought we to do, and what are we doing? What is our particular duty? Understand it, hold it in the heart, and outwardly become established in that very duty. This is the meaning. Holding discernment, become free from bondage; practise devotion to Hari and revel in Rāma’s rasa.
