[मूल — चौपाई और दोहा] ढढा ढाँको पाप न अपना। दोष पराय न सुख सो जपना॥ सत्य बचन सोई तप जानो। सत बिन कृत निज सफल न मानो॥ ढढा ढोल बजाय के, शिर पर घूमत काल। सिया रामको भजन कर, मिथ्या सब जगजाल॥ [सुजन-प्रबोधिनी सरल टीका] श्री ग्रन्थ कर्त्ता जी ढकार व्यंजन द्वारा संकेत करते हुये कहते हैं कि अपने में पापाचरण हों वह सब श्री प्रभु के सामने खुलासा कह दो, उसको झूठ बोल कर नहीं ढाँको, अर्थात छिपाओ नहीं। और दूसरे के पाप को देख कर, जान कर भी मुख से जल्दी कहने का साहस न करो। अर्थात न कहो, क्यों, कि बचन बोलना ही सच्चा तप है। (सत्यं ब्रूयात् प्रियं ब्रूयात् न ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियम्) यानी बिना सत्य के अपना सत कर्म किया हुआ भी सफल न समझो। ढोल बजा कर यानी खूब जना कर सिरपर काल आठों पहर लगा हुआ है। और अपना काम कर रहा है। अपने समय स्थिति को छिन छिन में खा रहा है। यानी नष्ट कर रहा है। ये तो निश्चय है कि संसार से मरकर अवश्य जाना है। यहाँ की कोई वस्तु अपने साथ नहीं जायेगी। अपना किया हुआ कर्म ही साथ जायेगा। और आप ये देखते हैं कि लड़के, बूढ़े, जवान सब जा रहे हैं कोई भी हो सबको काल के मुख में जाना पड़ता है। अर्थात फिर जिस वस्तु के लिये आठों पहर मरते हैं। श्रम करते हैं। वह सब यहीं पर पड़ी रह जाती है। एक डोरा भी कमर का साथ नहीं जाता फिर ऐसा जानते हुये भी क्यों ऐसा चिन्तामणि सदृश भगवत को प्राप्त करने वाला समय जानकर खोया जाय। इससे श्री सीताराम जी का भजन भक्ति, स्मरण, करते हुये रहना चाहिये। और सारे संसारी जालों को जो देखने में आ रहे हैं, झूठे समझना चाहिये। इसमें लगकर किसी में भी ग्राहक न होना चाहिये। ये तात्पर्य है। गुप्त पाप सब अघ की मूला। हरणा सुभाग देन बहु शूला॥ गुप्त भजन सब सुख को हेतू। भाग बढ़ावन करन सचेतू॥
[Root — Chaupai and Doha] Ḍhaḍhā: Do not conceal your own sin, nor eagerly recount another’s fault. Know truthful speech alone to be austerity; without truth, do not deem your deeds fruitful. Ḍhaḍhā: Time roams over your head beating its drum. Worship Sītā-Rāma; the whole worldly snare is false. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Through the consonant ḍha, the revered author indicates: If there has been sinful conduct in you, disclose it all before the Lord; do not cover it with falsehood—that is, do not hide it. Yet when you see and know another person’s sin, do not hasten boldly to speak it aloud. Do not tell it, for disciplined speech itself is true austerity: ‘Speak truth; speak what is pleasing; do not speak an unpleasant truth.’ In other words, without truth, do not regard even your own good deeds as successful. Beating its drum—that is, loudly announcing itself—Time remains above your head through all eight watches and carries out its work. Moment by moment it consumes the span allotted to you; it destroys it. It is certain that one must die and depart from this world. Nothing here will accompany you; only the karma you have performed will go along. You see children, the old, and the young all departing: whoever one may be, everyone must enter the mouth of Time. The things for which people toil and wear themselves out through all eight watches remain lying here. Not even the cord around one’s waist goes along. Knowing this, why squander the time through which one can attain Bhagavān, who is like the wish-fulfilling jewel? Therefore remain engaged in devotion to Śrī Sītā-Rāma and in their remembrance. Regard all the worldly snares that appear before you as false, and do not become a claimant for anything by entangling yourself in them. This is the purport. Concealed sin is the root of every transgression; it steals good fortune and gives many torments. Hidden worship is the cause of every joy; it increases good fortune and makes one vigilant.
