[Root — Chaupai] Ñañā: First renounce what is forbidden; through Veda-ordained practice cultivate love. Then renounce both injunction and prohibition; in the fourth station, love devotion itself. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] The author says: first abandon those paths that are to be renounced and take the form of prohibitions—that is, sense enjoyment and the like. Then, just as the Vedas and other good scriptures describe the paths by which one enters the way of loving attachment to Bhagavān, cultivate love for the Lord through Veda-ordained practice. Afterward relinquish both taking up and giving up, injunction and prohibition alike. Then practise devotion, the fourth station. Love and attachment to Śrī Prabhu is the first station; abandon the objects and concerns of prohibition—this is the second station, loving Bhagavān through Veda-ordained practice. Then the third station is the relinquishment of both injunction and prohibition: ‘Renounce actions that bring good and evil results.’ And this is the fourth station: ‘Worship me, the Lord of all that moves and does not move.’ ‘He is single-hearted whose understanding is such and does not turn away, O Hanumān: I am the servant, and the whole animate and inanimate world is the form of the Lord.’ Thereafter remain intent upon and wholly absorbed in this supreme loving devotion. And so forth.
