[Root — Doha] Nannā: Practice ninefold devotion; then this soul attains happiness. Love devotion to Rāma, adopting its marks as your natural disposition. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Through the consonant na, Śrī Rasik Alī Jī Mahārāja enjoins ninefold devotion. He says that when this living self embraces ninefold devotion—that is, attaches itself to Śrī Sītā-Rāma Jī in nine ways—it will become intent upon those practices and attain happiness. When it becomes fully engaged in the nine modes of devotion—hearing, singing, remembrance, service at the feet, reverence, worship, servitude, friendship, and self-surrender—it will behold Śrī Yugala Prabhu. What will be the fruit of that vision? ‘The supreme fruit of seeing Me is incomparable: the soul obtains its own innate nature.’ Through devotion one will behold Bhagavān; through that vision one will obtain one's own innate nature, and the living self will then attain true happiness. And so forth. How, then, will ninefold devotion arise? For this one must keep the company of Rāma's devotees—those who practice ninefold devotion—and adopt marks, form, disposition, and other qualities like theirs. What will result? ‘Practice the means and observe it for some days; then the mind's disposition passes beyond its former state.’ Through the company of devotees, natural devotion will be attained; it is the very form of innate happiness. This is further shown— ‘Without devotees' company, devotion does not arise; without devotion, no true happiness exists.’ Therefore love ninefold devotion. Whatever defining marks should accompany a particular form of devotion, adopt those marks naturally. Let the devotion be neither ostentatious nor hypocritical, but always of one unwavering essence. Then this living self will attain Bhagavān, who is the form of true happiness. This is the purport—
