[Root — Doha] Gaggā: Always take up the qualities, keeping generous holy company. Only by the rope of guṇa does one reach guṇa, as a rope draws the essence from a well. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Through the consonant ga, Śrī Rasik Alī Jī Mahārāja commands us always to take up the hosts of qualities of Śrī Sītā-Rāma Jī: one should continually receive the Divine Couple's qualities and always remain in true company, the company of true persons. How is holy company generous? Your heart should remain ever intent upon the otherwise unattainable reality, and holy company itself enables one to attain what is otherwise unattainable. Adopt the generous disposition of holy company; offer body, mind, wealth, and everything you possess to praising Śrī Prabhu's qualities, to holy company, and to those who keep holy company. This is the meaning, because through guṇa alone one attains guṇa. Just as without a rope in the form of guṇa the vessel of the heart cannot obtain the essential, life-giving water in the form of guṇa, so when the neck of the heart-vessel is secured in the rope of guṇa, it descends, takes refuge in guṇa, and obtains the water that is the supreme essence—that is, the nectar of devotion to Prabhu. And so forth. ‘Without the Lord's hosts of qualities and the company of true persons, the poverty of fear before worldly existence cannot be destroyed.’
