[Root — Doha] Khakhā: Whoever labors to sustain this body, an empty hide— this is the very root of ignorance, separating the mind from the Lord's feet. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Without holy company and without being engaged in the qualities of Śrī Yugala Prabhu, what use is this human body? It is of no use at all—like an empty hide, it is of no use to any living being. If someone gives nourishment, maintenance, and comfort through many kinds of exertion to this empty-hide body, devoid of Bhagavān's qualities and bereft of holy company in the qualities of Bhagavān and the devotee, and enjoys pleasures full of toil which are not real in any of the three times, what can be said of that person? This indeed is the root of ignorance, by which the mind is becoming separated from Śrī Prabhu's feet. ‘Lakṣmaṇa serves Sīyā and Raghubīra just as an undiscerning person serves the body.’ In this way a devotee becomes wholly absorbed and serves Bhagavān, while an undiscerning person, conceited about the body, serves the body. Only through ignorance does the mind become separated from the Lord's feet. Attainment of Śrī Prabhu's feet is possible only through knowledge and devotion. This shows that those who recognize the body as an aid to loving attachment to Bhagavān, and use the body to engage in the hosts of qualities of Bhagavān and the devotee, are embodiments of supreme knowledge. They can never be separated from Śrī Prabhu's feet. But those who nourish the empty body—‘cruelly intent on nourishing their own bodies’—do not attain the qualities or service of Bhagavān and the devotee, and so forth. Doha— ‘To engage oneself in the Lord is excellent knowledge; to abandon this is extreme ignorance. To nourish the body without devotion is only the cause of hell.’
