[Root — Doha] The poet and the learned say: having gained the rare human body, always keep holy company, your love fixed upon the feet of Sīyā's Lord. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Completing the first consonant, kakāra, by means of a doha, Śrī Rasik Alī Jī Mahārāja says: I am not inventing on my own what I say in this Bārah Khaṛī. The eminent poet Vālmīka, Vyāsa and the others, and Śrī Tulasī, Sūra, Kabīra and others have confirmed it. The learned—that is, impartial scholars—also expound this teaching, and have done so: after obtaining the rare human body, one should always keep the company of true persons. The sense of the word ‘rare’ is that the human body is an embodiment of causeless grace. And by saying ‘human’, it means that the human body is fit to accomplish every aim of life; that is, it can obtain things difficult even for the gods to attain. Śrī Gosvāmī Tulasīdāsa says in the Mānasa: ‘By great good fortune one has obtained a human body, which all the scriptures declare difficult even for the gods to attain.’ ‘It is the abode of spiritual practice and the gateway that grants liberation; one who obtains it yet does not set the next world right—’ Doha: ‘That person suffers in the hereafter and beats his head in regret, falsely blaming Time, karma, and God.’ ‘The fruit of this body is not sensual enjoyment, brother; even heaven is brief and ends in sorrow.’ ‘Obtaining a human body, they give their minds to sense objects; those fools exchange nectar and take poison.’ ‘No one ever calls good the person who throws away a touchstone and takes a guñjā seed.’ Thus the human body is like a casket of wonders, for within it ‘Sometimes, out of compassion, the loving Lord gives a human body without any cause.’ And ‘The human body is a vessel for the ocean of becoming; My grace is the favorable wind.’ Driven by the wind of Śrī Prabhu's grace, it can proceed without doubt across the ocean of worldly existence and reach its true destination. When? When, with this jewel, you associate with—that is, keep company with—and take hold of the real things that transcend all: Bhagavān's name, form, play, abode, and so forth, and, higher than all these, the name, form, qualities, and so forth of the Lord's devotee-saints. Then you will attain love for the lotus feet of Śrī Sītā-Rāma. Or one should place love in Śrī Sītā-Rāma's lotus feet and enter the company of true realities and true persons, because this alone is the essence, the reality of truth, in this world. ‘Holy company is rare in the world, even for a single moment or the space of a daṇḍa.’ And again: ‘Holy company is the root of every happiness; it is Bhagavān's own form and removes the thorn of worldly existence.’ Therefore one should always remain in holy company and always continue loving the lotus feet of the Divine Couple, without missing even a day, and so forth.
