[Root — Chaupai] Flee from desire, anger, and greed; be lovingly attached to the feet of Sīya and Raghubara. [Sujana-prabodhinī Simple Commentary] Meaning—O embodied soul! Always remain far from lust, anger, and greed. What is their nature? ‘The force behind greed is desire and hypocrisy; behind lust, woman alone.’ ‘The force behind anger is harsh speech, the great sages say upon reflection.’ When you remain far from lust, anger, and greed, then you will ‘not’ be able to love the lotus feet of Sīya and Raghubara—that is, Śrī Sītā-Rāma—according to the literal negative printed in this witness. In other words, love will be attained. ‘In this world-night the yogis keep awake, detached from the world fashioned by Birañci (Brahmā).’ ‘Know that the soul has awakened in the world when it has become dispassionate toward every sensual delight.’ ‘When discernment arises, delusion and confusion flee; then loving attachment to Raghunātha’s feet appears.’ ‘Lust and the other passions, pride, and hypocrisy do not dwell in that person; dear one, I remain forever under that person’s sway.’ Doha—‘Lust, anger, pride, and greed, O Lord, are all roads to hell. Abandoning them all, worship Raghubīra, whom the saints worship.’ And so forth. (Commentary section 2)
