Synopsis

Hearing Nārada's speech, Madhusūdana the Lord, smiling, makes his reply. "Whatever you tell me for the welfare of the three worlds, know that I have set it rightly in motion; hear now the response." The chapter then specifies which cosmic elements will accompany him: his imperishable divine cows, wish-fulfilling, who wander with their calves under his own protection. A concluding verse: laying aside his ancient body, the wise Hari joined himself to the house of Vasudeva. The Viṣṇu-parva is about to open on Gokula.

Verse 1

नारदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा सस्मितं मधुसूदनः प्रत्युवाच शुभं वाक्यं वरेण्यः प्रभुर् ईश्वरः

Hearing Nārada's word, the smiling Madhusūdana — the excellent, the Lord — answered with auspicious speech.

त्रैलोक्यस्य हितार्थाय यन् मा वदसि नारद तस्य सम्यक्प्रवृत्तस्य श्रूयताम् उत्तरं वचः

trailokyasya hitārthāya yan mā vadasi nārada tasya samyakpravṛttasya śrūyatām uttaraṃ vacaḥ

विदिता देहिनो जाता मयैते भुवि दानवाः यां यां तनुं समास्थाय दैत्यः पुष्यति विग्रहम्

संप्रवेक्ष्याम्य् अहं योगम् आत्मनश् च परस्य च संप्राप्य पार्थिवं लोकं मानुषत्वम् उपागतः

नारायणेमं सिद्धार्थम् उपायं शृणु मे विभो भुवि यस् ते जनयिता जननी च भविष्यति

nārāyaṇemaṃ siddhārtham upāyaṃ śṛṇu me vibho bhuvi yas te janayitā jananī ca bhaviṣyati

कस् ता धर्षयितुं शक्तो मम गाः कश्यपाद् ऋते अक्षयं याः क्षरन्त्य् अग्रं पयो देवामृतोपमम्

यदि प्रभवतां दण्डो लोके कार्यम् अजानताम् न विद्यते लोकगुरो न स्युर् वै लोकसेतवः

yadi prabhavatāṃ daṇḍo loke kāryam ajānatām na vidyate lokaguro na syur vai lokasetavaḥ

यथा वास्तु तथा वास्तु कर्तव्ये भगवान् प्रभुः मम गावः प्रतीयन्तां ततो गन्तास्मि सागरम्

यस् ते ऽत्मा देवता गावो या गावः स त्वम् अव्ययम् लोकानां त्वत्प्रवृत्तानाम् एकं गोब्राह्मणं स्मृतम्

त्रातव्याः प्रथमं गावस् त्रातास् त्रायन्ति ता द्विजान् गोब्राह्मणपरित्राणात् परित्रातं जगद् भवेत्

छादयित्वात्मनात्मानं मायया योगरूपया गोपकन्यासहस्राणि रमयंश् चर मेदिनीम्

गाश् च ते रक्षतो विष्णो वनानि परिधावतः वनमालापरिक्षिप्तं धन्या द्रक्ष्यन्ति ते वपुः

tvadbhaktāḥ puṇḍarīkākṣa tava cittavaśānugāḥ goṣu gopā bhaviṣyanti sahāyāḥ satataṃ tava vane cārayato gās tu goṣṭhāṃś ca paridhāvataḥ majjato yamunāyāṃ ca ratim āpsyanti te tvayi

जीवितं वसुदेवस्य भविष्यति सुजीवितम् यस् त्वया तात इत्य् उक्तः पुत्र इत्य् एव वक्ष्यति

स हि धन्यतरो लोके यस्य त्वं पुत्रतां गतः स हि पुण्यकृतां श्रेष्ठो यस् त्वां पुत्रेति कीर्तयेत् ये नमस्यन्ति देव त्वां गोपालकृतलक्षणम् ते हि पुण्यकृतां श्रेष्ठाः प्रणम्याः सर्वजन्तुभिः अथ वा कस्य पुत्रत्वं गच्छेरन् यत्र कश्यपात् का च धारयितुं शक्ता विष्णो त्वाम् अदितिं विना

sa hi dhanyataro loke yasya tvaṃ putratāṃ gataḥ sa hi puṇyakṛtāṃ śreṣṭho yas tvāṃ putreti kīrtayet ye namasyanti deva tvāṃ gopālakṛtalakṣaṇam te hi puṇyakṛtāṃ śreṣṭhāḥ praṇamyāḥ sarvajantubhiḥ atha vā kasya putratvaṃ gaccheran yatra kaśyapāt kā ca dhārayituṃ śaktā viṣṇo tvām aditiṃ vinā

योगेनात्मसमुत्थेन त्वं गच्छ विजयाय वै वयम् अप्य् आलयं स्वं गच्छामो मधुसूदन

इत्य् उक्त्वा देवदेवेशं ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः जगाम स प्रभुर् गेहं देवाश् चापि यथागतम् स देवान् अभ्यनुज्ञाय विविक्ते त्रिदिवालये जगाम विष्णुः स्वं देशं क्षीरोदस्योत्तरां दिशम्

पुराणं तत्र विन्यस्य देहं हरिर् उदारधीः आत्मानं योजयाम् आस वसुदेवगृहे प्रभुः

Placing the old body there, Hari, of noble mind, the Lord, joined himself to the house of Vasudeva.

Verse commentary

Viṣṇu's Acceptance and the Iconography of the Avatāra

विष्णोर् अवताराङ्गीकारः गोपालरूपविधानम् च

Verses 12, 34, 37, 41, 42, 44, 49: Viṣṇu's pledge to kill the named demons through his yoga, Vasudeva identified as Kaśyapa's aṃśa with Devakī and Rohiṇī as Aditi and Surabhi, Brahmā asking Viṣṇu to descend for the welfare of the worlds, the promise that those who see the gopāla-form will be blessed, the famous iconographic description (pītāmbara, nīla-kuñcita hair, vana-mālā, peacock-fan, lotus-eyes), the blessing that Vasudeva will be addressed as 'father', and the chapter's quiet closing that Hari placed himself in Vasudeva's house. HV 45 is one of the Harivaṃśa's richest chapters — the chapter where the whole Kṛṣṇa-avatāra is designed in divine council. Viṣṇu, hearing Nārada's message, replies by listing the demons he already knows by name (Kaṃsa, Keśi, Pralamba, Dhenuka, Pūtanā, Kāliya, Cāṇūra, Muṣṭika, Ariṣṭa, Śiśupāla, Pauṇḍra, Sālva, Kālayavana, Ekalavya). He commits to descend. Brahmā then supplies the backstory: Vasudeva is Kaśyapa reincarnated as penance for having once helped steal Varuṇa's cows, and Devakī and Rohiṇī are Aditi and Surabhi. Brahmā prescribes the avatāra's form — *pītāmbara, nīla-kuñcita hair, vana-mālā, peacock-fan, lotus eyes* — the iconography every later bhakti tradition will inherit. The chapter closes with Hari placing himself in Vasudeva's house. The Kṛṣṇa every Warkari sings is the Kṛṣṇa of this chapter's design.

HV 45.12

कंसादींश् चापि तान् सर्वान् वधिष्यामि महासुरान् । तेन तेन विधानेन येन यः शान्तिम् एष्यति ॥

kaṃsādīṃś cāpi tān sarvān vadhiṣyāmi mahā-surān | tena tena vidhānena yena yaḥ śāntim eṣyati

'I shall kill all those great asuras — Kaṃsa and the rest — each by that means by which he will come to peace.'

The Living Words

*Kaṃsādīn tān sarvān*, 'those, Kaṃsa-first and all'. *Vadhiṣyāmi*, 'I shall kill'. *Mahā-surān*, 'great asuras'. *Tena tena vidhānena*, 'by each that-that way'. *Yena yaḥ śāntim eṣyati*, 'by which each will attain peace'.

The Heart of It

The verse is astonishing in its tenderness. *Yena yaḥ śāntim eṣyati* — 'by which each will attain peace'. The killing is not punishment; it is the specific *vidhāna*, method, by which each particular soul is released into *śānti*. The Varkari tradition's teaching that even the Lord's punitive acts are, for the recipient, the exact *vidhāna* that brings that soul its peace — that Kṛṣṇa is the physician whose surgery differs with each patient — is in this verse. Jñāneśvar's Haripāṭh knows this: the Name treats each bhakta differently, *yena yaḥ śāntim eṣyati*.

HV 45.34

तद् अस्य कश्यपस्यांशस् तेजसा कश्यपोपमः । वसुदेव इति ख्यातो गोषु तिष्ठति भूतले ॥

tad asya kaśyapasyāṃśas tejasā kaśyapopamaḥ | vasudeva iti khyāto goṣu tiṣṭhati bhūtale

'That aṃśa of Kaśyapa — equal in tejas to Kaśyapa himself — is known as Vasudeva; he stays on the earth among cows.'

The Living Words

*Kaśyapasya aṃśaḥ*, 'aṃśa (portion) of Kaśyapa'. *Tejasā kaśyapopamaḥ*, 'in tejas like Kaśyapa'. *Vasudeva iti khyātaḥ*, 'known as Vasudeva'. *Goṣu tiṣṭhati bhūtale*, 'stays on the earth among cows'.

The Heart of It

The verse is Brahmā's revelation of the hidden genealogy. *Goṣu tiṣṭhati* — 'stays among cows' — the epithet that will later become the Lord's own: Gopāla, Govinda. The Varkari tradition's love of the detail that Kaśyapa himself came down as Vasudeva 'among cows' — that the father of the incarnation is himself a cowherd-king cursed by the theft of Varuṇa's cows — is in this verse. The cows are the frame through which the incarnation arrives. Jñāneśvar's Haripāṭh's gopāla-centric devotion has HV 45.34 as its father-verse.

HV 45.37

सुरभी रोहिणी देवी चादितिर् देवकी त्व् अभूत् । तत्रावतर लोकानां भवाय मधुसूदन ॥

surabhī rohiṇī devī cāditir devakī tv abhūt | tatrāvatara lokānāṃ bhavāya madhusūdana

'Surabhi became the goddess Rohiṇī, and Aditi became Devakī. There descend, for the welfare of the worlds, O Madhusūdana!'

*Surabhī rohiṇī devī*, 'Surabhi [became] the goddess Rohiṇī'. *Aditiḥ devakī abhūt*, 'Aditi became Devakī'. *Tatrāvatara*, 'there descend'. *Lokānāṃ bhavāya*, 'for the welfare of the worlds'. *Madhusūdana*, 'O slayer-of-Madhu' — the vocative.

The Heart of It

The verse is the chapter's formal invocation. *Tatrāvatara lokānāṃ bhavāya* — 'descend, for the welfare of the worlds'. The Varkari tradition has read *avatara* here as both imperative and vocative — the chapter's direct command by the Creator to the Preserver: come. Jñāneśvar's Haripāṭh echoes this formula constantly: *Rāma-Kṛṣṇa-Hari*, the bhakta is calling *avatara* too, asking the Name to descend into the present moment. *Lokānāṃ bhavāya* — 'for the welfare of the worlds' — is still the reason.

HV 45.41

गाश् च ते रक्षतो विष्णो वनानि परिधावतः । वनमालापरिक्षिप्तं धन्या द्रक्ष्यन्ति ते वपुः ॥

gāś ca te rakṣato viṣṇo vanāni paridhāvataḥ | vana-mālā-parikṣiptaṃ dhanyā drakṣyanti te vapuḥ

'Protecting the cows, O Viṣṇu, and running through the forests — the blessed will see your body, girded with a forest-garland.'

The verse names the aesthetic and the blessing together. *Dhanyā drakṣyanti te vapuḥ* — 'the blessed will see your body'. The Varkari tradition's entire darśan-culture — the *vari*-walk to see Pāṇḍuraṅga at Paṇḍharpūr — is this one promise extended across fifteen centuries. Jñāneśvar's Haripāṭh's assurance that the bhakta who sings the Name will see the Lord has HV 45.41 as one of its Sanskrit guarantees. The Lord will be visible to the one who walks through forests alongside him.

पीताम्बरधरं चैव नीलकुञ्चितमूर्धजम् । वनमालाकृतोरस्कं मयूरव्यजनाकुलम् । विष्णो पद्मपलाशाक्ष गोपालवसतिं गते ॥

pītāmbara-dharaṃ caiva nīla-kuñcita-mūrdhajam | vana-mālā-kṛtoraskaṃ mayūra-vyajanākulam | viṣṇo padma-palāśākṣa gopāla-vasatiṃ gate

'Wearing the yellow cloth, dark-curled-hair, with forest-garland against the chest, filled with peacock-fans — O Viṣṇu, lotus-petal-eyed, gone to the gopāla-dwelling.'

The verse is the Harivaṃśa's iconographic gift to every subsequent Kṛṣṇa-devotion. *Pītāmbara, nīla-kuñcita, vana-mālā, mayūra-vyajana, padma-palāśa-akṣa* — the five defining features of the Gopāla-Kṛṣṇa that every Marāṭhī Warkari painter, every Rajput miniaturist, every Pahari idol-carver has inherited. The Varkari tradition's love of this verse is indescribable; it is the *śabda*-source of *darśana*. Jñāneśvar describes exactly this form when he opens his mouth to sing; the peacock-fan, the yellow cloth, the vana-mālā on the chest are what the bhakta has in mind before the first syllable of the Name.

HV 45.44

जीवितं वसुदेवस्य भविष्यति सुजीवितम् । यस् त्वया तात इत्य् उक्तः पुत्र इत्य् एव वक्ष्यति ॥

jīvitaṃ vasudevasya bhaviṣyati su-jīvitam | yas tvayā tāta ity uktaḥ putra ity eva vakṣyati

'The life of Vasudeva shall be a blessed life — he whom you call father shall say to you 'son'.'

*Jīvitam vasudevasya*, 'the life of Vasudeva'. *Bhaviṣyati su-jīvitam*, 'shall be a blessed life'. *Tāta ity uktaḥ*, 'addressed as father'. *Putra ity eva vakṣyati*, 'will say only son'.

The Heart of It

The verse catches the tender reciprocity. *Yas tvayā tāta ity uktaḥ putra ity eva vakṣyati* — 'he whom you call *tāta* (father) will say *putra* (son) to you'. The Varkari tradition's attention to the exchange of vocative words between the Lord and his parents — the *tāta/putra*, *amma/bāḷ* — as the very substance of bhakti's sweetest intimacy, is in this verse. Jñāneśvar's Haripāṭh understands this: every *mātā-pitā* in the tradition are those who have earned the right to call the Name *putra*.

HV 45.49

पुराणं तत्र विन्यस्य देहं हरिर् उदारधीः । आत्मानं योजयाम् आस वसुदेवगृहे प्रभुः ॥

purāṇaṃ tatra vinyasya dehaṃ harir udāra-dhīḥ | ātmānaṃ yojayām āsa vasudeva-gṛhe prabhuḥ

Placing down there his ancient body, the noble-minded Hari — the Lord — joined himself in Vasudeva's house.

The verse is the chapter's quietest sentence. *Ātmānaṃ yojayām āsa vasudeva-gṛhe* — 'joined himself in Vasudeva's house'. No thunder, no fanfare; the Lord placed down one body and joined himself to another house. The Varkari tradition's deepest reading: the Lord does not *arrive* at Vasudeva's house; he *joins himself* to it — *yojayati* — yokes himself, as yoga does. Jñāneśvar's Haripāṭh's teaching that the Name's coming into the bhakta's heart is a *yoga*, a joining — not an arrival from outside but a yoking to what was already one's own — has HV 45.49 as its seed.

The seven verses trace the chapter's design: Viṣṇu's pledge that each demon will be killed by the method that brings each one peace (45.12), the backstory of Vasudeva as Kaśyapa's aṃśa living among cows (45.34), Brahmā's invocation for the descent (45.37), the promise of darśan to the blessed who walk with him in forests (45.41), the iconographic description of the Kṛṣṇa-form every later tradition inherits (45.42), the blessing that Vasudeva will be called father (45.44), and the quiet closing that Hari yoked himself into Vasudeva's house (45.49). The Harivaṃśa's richest chapter of avatāra-design.

Echo in the saints

HV 45 is perhaps the single most-cited Harivaṃśa chapter in the Warkari tradition's devotional imagination. HV 45.12's *yena yaḥ śāntim eṣyati* has been read as the Lord's promise that even his punitive acts are individualized *vidhāna* for the receiver's peace — the tender theology that runs through Tukaram's abhaṅgas. HV 45.42's iconographic verse — *pītāmbara, nīla-kuñcita, vana-mālā, mayūra, padma-palāśa-akṣa* — is nearly verbatim what every Warkari painter has for centuries been given to render; the verse is the icon's verbal negative. And HV 45.49's *ātmānaṃ yojayām āsa vasudeva-gṛhe* is Jñāneśvar's exact model for what the Name does in the bhakta's house: it joins, it yokes, it does not merely arrive.

HV 45.49's ātmānaṃ yojayām āsa vasudeva-gṛhe is the Harivaṃśa's narrative statement of Gītā 4.6. The Lord, imperishable, 'joins himself' to a specific house by his own ātma-māyā. The Warkari tradition reads them together: the Lord is not born at Vasudeva's — he is yoked into being there.
