—if revelation, the ancient histories, the Śrī Mānasa Rāmāyaṇa, and similar works had not been written down, everyone would have remained utterly blank, and even the sight of learned teachers would have been unavailable. Question: Why is śṛṅgāra-rasa called the king of rasas? Answer: ‘It reaches or goes to the high summit, therefore it is śṛṅgāra.’ The word śṛṅga denotes a high station; that which reaches this elevated station is called śṛṅgāra. Its very etymology thus establishes without dispute that it is the king of rasas. Rasarāja, pure, radiant, and sweet are synonyms for this śṛṅgāra. It is king because all other rasas enter within it, and because genuine self-surrender also occurs within it. For example, in Śrī Vālmīki's Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa 42.12, the emperor says: ‘Whenever occasion required, Kauśalyā attended me as a maidservant, as a companion, as a wife, as a sister, and as a mother.’ Kauśalyā behaved as each need required: like a maid in service, a companion in laughter, a wife by her own relation, a sister in encouraging the emperor's other marriages, and a mother at meals. Thus every rasa enters within the husband-wife disposition of śṛṅgāra, and for this reason it is called their king. Now hear how it contains self-surrender. The Śrīmad Bhāgavata describes nine kinds of devotion; a ‘kind’ is that which is distinct from another—
