—the twenty-second discourse: ‘Regarding the root mantra of the Śrī Rāmānuja tradition, Dhanurdāsa says that it teaches taking the hand, marriage, and union on the fourth day.’ (22) This statement should be kept in mind. The meaning given here follows the Cūḍāmaṇi commentary by Śrī Viṣvaksenācārya on the Vārtāmālā and the Śrīvacanabhūṣaṇa. Meaning: the root mantra teaches the marriage in which Brahman and the soul take one another's hand; the relationship of Lord and wife; and the union of husband and wife on the fourth day. So says Dhanurdāsa. Śrī Kṛṣṇapāda makes the same statement in discourse 120. Now discourse 120 spoken by Śrī Kṛṣṇapāda: ‘In the first word is the taking of the hand; in the middle word, sitting together; in the third word, the fourth-day bed.’ In praṇava, the first word of the root mantra, is taught the hand-taking marriage of Brahman and the soul. In namaḥ, its second or middle word, Brahman and the soul are said to sit and rise together. In the mantra's third word, bearing the dative ending, Brahman and the soul are said to unite and lie upon one bed on the fourth day. All this deserves reflection when asking what the tradition's doctrine is and worship in which rasa holds primacy. Among the four aphorisms of the Śrīvacanabhūṣaṇa concerning relationship, aphorism 122 asks: ‘If it be asked how inclination toward the Lord is fitting’—
