—श्रीमत् सनत्कुमारजी से जिज्ञासा की थी। उस समय श्रीसनत्कुमारजी ने पूछा था कि आपने क्या-क्या पढ़ा है? देवर्षिजी का उत्तर इस प्रकार है— स होवाच—ऋग्वेदं भगवोऽध्येमि यजुर्वेदं सामवेदमाथर्वणं चतुर्थमितिहासपुराणं पञ्चमं वेदानां वेदम्। अर्थात् हे भगवन्, ऋग्वेद, यजुर्वेद, सामवेद, अथर्ववेद एवं इतिहास-पुराणादि सम्पूर्ण विद्या को मैंने पढ़ा है; किन्तु ‘सोऽहं भगवो मन्त्रविदेवास्मि नात्मवित्।’ अर्थात् हे भगवन्, मैं समस्त वेद-मन्त्रों को जानता हूँ, तथापि आत्मतत्त्व को जानने वाला नहीं हूँ। ‘श्रुतं ह्येव मे भगवद्दृशेभ्यस्तरति शोकमात्मवित्।’ अर्थात् हे भगवन्, आप कृपा करके हमें अविद्यारूप शोकसागर से पार करें। देवर्षिजी की विनम्र प्रार्थना को सुनकर श्रीसनत्कुमारजी ने ब्रह्मज्ञान से उनको पूर्ण किया था। यथा— तमसः पारं दर्शयति भगवान् सनत्कुमारः। और इस प्रकार उपर्युक्त छान्दोग्योपनिषद् के अन्तर्गत परम रहस्य के अवलोकन से यह भलीभाँति विदित होता है कि बिना आचार्य के ब्रह्मतत्त्व का रहस्य नहीं ज्ञात हो सकता है। चौपाई श्रीमानस के— गुर बिनु भवनिधि तरइ न कोई। जौं बिरंचि संकर सम होई॥ (प्रश्न) किं ज्ञानं, किं विज्ञानं, कः उचित संस्कारः? (उत्तर) प्रथमं यदा सांख्यशास्त्रेण वा जडचैतन्ययोर्विभागस्तज्ज्ञानम्। किं—

—Sanatkumāra about this. Sanatkumāra then asked him, ‘What have you studied?’ The divine seer answered as follows: He said: ‘Revered sir, I study the Ṛgveda, the Yajurveda, the Sāmaveda, the Atharvaveda as the fourth, and history and Purāṇa as the fifth Veda—the Veda of the Vedas.’ That is: ‘Lord, I have studied the Ṛgveda, Yajurveda, Sāmaveda, Atharvaveda, history, Purāṇa, and the other branches of learning. Yet, revered sir, I am only a knower of mantras, not a knower of the self. I have heard from persons such as yourself that one who knows the self crosses sorrow. Lord, be gracious and carry us beyond the ocean of sorrow that takes the form of ignorance.’ Hearing the divine seer’s humble appeal, Sanatkumāra fulfilled him through knowledge of Brahman, as scripture says: ‘The blessed Sanatkumāra showed him the farther shore of darkness.’ Contemplation of this supreme mystery in the Chāndogya Upaniṣad makes it thoroughly clear that the mystery of Brahman cannot be known without a teacher.
