Fresh English translation
Near the revered guru remain like one who knows nothing; near the Lord remain wholly dependent. Before saints remember only your own faults, free of any independent self-assertion. In the pure presence of the revered teacher, consider him all-knowing; serve continually with humility and cast away the thought of ego. Meeting saints, speak abundantly of the Supreme and hold rasikas above all. Remain close to the divine and captivating forest of Sītā’s Lord’s virtues, meditating upon its pure beauty. Regard alien company as a serpent opposed to Hari and recognize it as deadly poison and a weapon. Let the precious life endure millions of hardships, but, wise one, never adorn yourself with bad company. Skillfully hold the chosen Lord’s presence in all things, forgetting the many opposed corruptions. Remove pride, delusion, and all true and false self-importance; utter Rāma’s name day and night. Yearn to meet the beloved Lord and Lady, forgetting the world’s countless alternatives. Remain wholly dependent, abandoning every other hope and desiring only the meeting with the Beloved. Keep the mind continually absorbed in that concern and taste the desired rasa of beholding the Lord. Make attachment to the body insipid in every way; abandon the worthless and grasp the essence, drinking its rasa. Until the body’s end, remain always adorned with remembrance and abandon carelessness. Make the mind free of change, forsaking laziness and poisonous argument; Yugalānanya’s refuge receives the Beloved’s supreme grace. Whoever daily reflects joyfully in this manner, forgetting limiting identities, adorns Yugalānanya’s refuge and refines rasa-filled love. Friend, continually contemplate the five most capable truths: the delusive monsoon in the mind disappears and a wondrous awakening arises. Near holy Kāmadagiri, beside Jānakī Kuṇḍa, in delightful sacred Pramodavana, the author composed this saffron lamp of a book.
