Fresh English translation

Abandon the obstruction and worship sacred Jānakī together with her Life, in full conviction. An obstructed person does not understand that the body is subject to destined karma and then feels no remorse for attachment to it. Such a person loves the body’s relations excessively and feels no sorrow even after recognizing the body as dust. It commits offences against Sītā’s Lord and likewise harbours disrespect for pure saints. Offence against rasikas is unfathomably grave; all these things obstruct surrender in every way. The Lord does not tolerate offence against saints, even if one performs millions of disciplines. Therefore, beloved, remain alert and discard it by every possible means. Food from a royal capital and other harmful food, and the search for elevated devotional feeling without faith, destroy austerity; through such eating, terrible darkness settles in the heart. Therefore conquer the tongue and wholly give up the taste of the six flavours. By conquering the tongue one gains one’s own joyful rasa; increase worship by living on alms. Abandon the ways of dog, deer, and king; lovingly grasp the bee’s secret. Then refine the practice of not asking, and ward off corrupt acceptance with the hand. Without conquering the tongue one does not receive true taste, nor do the chosen Lord’s sweet virtues cover the heart. So long as one loves the world’s flavours, the abundance of rasa remains difficult to obtain. Do not live intimately with just anyone; remain with rasa-filled companions of the same kind. Preserve especially pure understanding in your heart, having heard of false company and seen it with your own eyes. Continually adopt the favourable course, abandoning the qualities and causes of worldly display. Thus the form of obstruction to attainment has been described; understand it and continually abandon it under the wise guru’s guidance. The five truths remove calamity and carry one across the immeasurably vast ocean of becoming. In this manner, with firm understanding and a mind free of delusion and pride, know the excellent Five Truths as a treasury of bliss.
