Reflect discerningly upon the revered guru’s word and abandon the adversary that causes your own sorrow. A powerful obstruction to the Supreme’s nature is love placed among other divine children: taking another god as equal to the Lord, worshipping that god, and making the mind take it as authority. It regards Brahmā as protector apart from Sītā’s Lord and undertakes worship of other gods. It places other deities on an equal level, installs human thinking in the chosen Lord, imagines the form only within the material intellect, and fills contemplation with the idea that he is not sovereign. It accepts many inventions of its own head, knows not Veda and Purāṇa as authority, and fails in its dim understanding to recognize the sacred image as identical with the Supreme’s form. These and similar ideas obstruct the Supreme’s nature; the true guru awakens the disciple against them in every way. If you desire firm love for the Supreme, carefully contrive to abandon obstruction to the means. It makes the heart delight in another discipline and then reveals supremacy within that lesser thing. It treats the goal with lightness and the means with disproportionate grandeur. Continually examining and embellishing one’s own limiting identities is an exceedingly painful obstruction to practice. It regards methods without devotion or surrender as great and is filled with pride. Where no loving relation to the Lord exists, obstruction is undoubtedly present. Obstruction to the human aim abandons the form of Sītā and Raghubīra and reveres another goal in the heart. It worships independently according to private desire and is consecrated to self-interest. Recognize this as opposition to the human aim; abandon it and worship Sītā and Rāma with love. Know firmly in your heart that any supposed good fruit apart from Sītā’s Beloved is equal to fruitlessness. Friend, learn from the true guru that obstruction to attainment is intensely painful.
