The eternally youthful Lord is a treasury of virtues beyond the Veda, wholly devoted to the play of a single rasa. Adorn yourself with exclusive love for the Couple and serve him with discernment. The emanational forms dwell in realms such as Āmoda; the Veda describes their beautiful bodies. Contemplate Vāsudeva and Pradyumna, and behold Saṅkarṣaṇa and Aniruddha. Their bodies, radiance, strength, and majesty continually overflow in countless ways. They cause creation, continuance, and preservation, work for the good of every world, and deliver souls. These emanational forms are free of material bodies; I have described them briefly, steeped in joy. Now hear lovingly the divisions of divine descent, through relation to which one gains welfare and security. Hear the Vedic arrangement: hold in mind the principal, power, invested, and secondary descents. The principal descent comes to destroy false religion, establish dharma securely, and protect devotees; in every way he is called compassionate to the lowly. His auspicious body gives happiness to people, a generous giver bringing joy to the poor. The immutable ocean of supreme compassion remains for some days, cutting through darkness and doubt. Leaving his delightful fame in the world, he speaks auspiciously and returns to his own Abode. Know this as the principal avatāra: Kṛṣṇa and the other generous forms of Hari. Whoever utters Sītā’s Lord’s name joins it to the cause of all these forms. At times the joy-giving Supreme Lord places his own radiance among the all-pervading forms, appears upon earth bearing form and virtues, and slays Rāvaṇa and other demons. For this reason devotees sing his qualities, while contrary sophists fall into darkness. The eternal Player manifests by his own will and gives happiness.
