With what effort can I make my plea? Reflecting on my own conduct, I admit defeat in my heart, understand, and grow afraid. (1) Hari, I stubbornly abandon the discipline by which you melt, knowing a person to be your servant; I follow instead the path that brings the net of calamity and grief night and day. (2) I know that doing good to others in mind, speech, and deed carries one across; contrary to this, I burn without cause at the sight of another’s happiness. (3) The Veda and Purana all teach that one should hold firmly to holy company; controlled by my pride, delusion, and envy, I do not honor it. (4) I perpetually love precisely that which keeps me forever in the ocean of becoming. Tell me now, Lord: by what strength can I remove worldly sorrow? (5) Whenever you melt through your own compassionate nature, then alone will I cross. Tulsidas trusts no other—why should he consume himself and die? (6)
