I feel no shame in calling myself your servant, Hari, though thoughtlessly and without regret I abandon the conduct that pleases you. (1) Sages renounce every attachment and worship him, arranging recitation, austerity, and sacrifice. By what effort can one as foolish, deeply wicked, and sinful as I attain him? (2) Hari is stainless, while my heart is seized by impurity; this seems an impossible conflict to me. Why would a swan come to a lake inhabited by crows, vultures, cranes, and pigs? (3) The wise take refuge in holy places and extinguish the three fierce afflictions, yet when I go there, pride, delusion, and greed torment me still more; even in heaven, a co-wife’s jealousy does not cease. (4) I tell others, ‘Saints are the boat for crossing the river of becoming,’ yet, Hari, I make them my greatest enemies and expect good from you. (5) I have no other place that I can name, so I stubbornly claim kinship with you. Crown of the generous, keep me in refuge; Tulsidas sings your virtues. (6)
