जो पै रहनि रामसों नाहीं। तौ नर खर कूकर सूकर सम बृथा जियत जग माहीं॥ १॥ काम, क्रोध, मद, लोभ, नींद, भय, भूख, प्यास सबहीके। मनुज देह सुर-साधु सराहत, सो सनेह सिय-पीके॥ २॥ सूर, सुजान, सुपूत सुलच्छन गनियत गुन गरुआई। बिनु हरिभजन इँदारुनके फल तजत नहीं करुआई॥ ३॥ कीरति, कुल करतूति, भूति भलि, सील सरूप सलोने। तुलसी प्रभु-अनुराग-रहित जस सालन साग अलोने॥ ४॥

If one’s way of life is not joined to Rama, that person lives uselessly in the world like a donkey, dog, or pig. (1) Lust, anger, pride, greed, sleep, fear, hunger, and thirst belong to all creatures. What gods and saints praise in the human body is love for Sita’s beloved. (2) One may be counted heroic, wise, a good son, well-marked, and weighty with virtues; without worship of Hari, like the colocynth fruit one does not relinquish bitterness. (3) Fame, lineage, deeds, splendid wealth, gracious character, and handsome form—Tulsi, without love for the Lord, they are like unsalted vegetable curry. (4)
